Mr Frederick 'Freddy' John Ortweiler MC

(1898 - 1922)

Ortweiler was a naturalised German Jewish officer who served with 29 Squadron RFC in 1917 and was captured. He was awarded the Military Cross for his third (and successful) escape attempt in 1918, but was killed in an aeroplane accident at Madrid in 1922.

His account of his time as a prisoner-of-war is in the National Archives, and his diaries, some letters and photos are in the RAF Museum. The collection contains detailed diaries of both his RFC/RAF service and life in north west London between 1917 and 1921.
